Commentary: Top Ten Missing Features of Second Life as an Educational Simulation Platform
Second Life truly is a phenomenon. It is exactly what the name and vision imply: an example of a parallel "multiverse". People will learn much in it, as they might alternatively learn via participating on a real-world sports team, running a real-world lemonade stand, or walking around a great real-world city.
Perhaps most importantly, participants learn "to be" through expressing themselves, including building elaborate sets, and exploring alternative groups with which to interact. Meanwhile, corporations will set up shop in Second Life, as in FaceBook and MySpace, to be where the kids are in an attempt to speak their language and get some eyeballs.
But when people talk about it as a platform for Educational Simulations, I am less excited. In fact, here are my list of top ten missing features from Second Life:
- Support for a good scripted story.
- Support for After action reviews (AARs)
- Heads up display (HUD) to support specific learning goals, as opposed to navigation.
- Interfaces that map to real world actions (see directing people in an educational sim: a case study in balancing "open-ended" with helpful )
- Dynamic AI Characters, with which participants can repeatedly try new behavior to see how they react, and any form of interesting computer controlled, scriptable units for a player to influence.
- The modeling of functional Work Processes
- Levels, tasks, and milestones.
- Dynamic systems, with interacting primary variables and secondary variables tied to Actions.
- Supporting mentor/supervisor/guides.
- Any direct support of Big Skills or Middle Skill (in a way that is richer than real life).

I see the value of SL not as a place for students to learn from using simulations created by others but as a creative space with almost unlimited possibilities. A place where students can learn by creating things. In this context it is missing good intuitive authoring tools with a low entry and high ceiling.
So fortunately there's space for new developments out there. Its crucial that SL goes completelly Open source so litle "SL planets" can be setted up with specific rules, in this case for educational purposes.
I think you are comparing apples with oranges when you compare Second Life to products that already have structured, scaffolded experiences built in.
Second Life is an open platform that gives you the freedom to create any thing and any experience you need to achieve the level of scaffolding you require (while still leaving others the freedom to create more open experiences).
You should be able to create all of the features you have described within Second Life, if not using the in-world building and scripting tools, then by tweaking the currently available open source client/viewer.
BTW - there are instructional HUDs already... created by residents.

Part of me wants to challenge the idea that you seem to have done the equivalent of saying I want to drive screws so I'm going to select a hammer as the tool to investigate, but Sean's "apples and oranges" will suffice.
I think you have missed something on your visits to Second Life. As far as I can see any of the tools can be written. As Second Life is largely a community created undertaking - rather than point out their absence it might have been quicker to script a few yourself.
As a drama teacher I find "simulation" itself quite a limiting structure. I recall recognising some of the same limitations when I read "Simulations and the future of learning" - in supporting creative and expressive learning simulations are not especially useful.
Having said that, I think an understanding of drama conventions and forms can be applied to lift simulations out of the doldrums.
Second Life is still emerging as an educational tool - several educators have found incredibly exciting ways to use SL to engage students and motivate rich learning.
Simulations in SL are really only limited to the capacity of the people creating them. I am curious to see the work you have created inworld as exemplars.
I think the claim that these features are missing is somewhat misleading and erroneous - the features are all there, they simply haven't been applied to many educational settings as yet.
Please point us to your creations inworld so we can see what you mean.
I agree with Sean and Kim in thinking that you may have missed the point of Second Life. It was never intended to be an deucational simulation platform per se. Nonetheless, it is flexible enough to have the "missing features" added by those who find them necessary to their purposes. I believe that SL can also serve as a learning tool in the manner Tony indentifies, as a place for students to learn through the excercise of the creative process. SL's most important contribution to my miind, however its neither of these, but rather pointing the way toward the 3D internet with all of that potential and challenge. How the learning and other serious games communities make use of this emerging resource is yet to be determined.

... Clark would you like to explain further what you mean by this cryptic 'lens' comment? Are you suggesting your post is deliberately misleading? Or that you actually know better but don't want to tell us? Your post reads like a straightforward list of problematisations of SL based on your own set of dictionary like definitions? And I think some of us may disagree with these.
I mean that I argued that despite SL's brilliance in other areas, it is not a sufficient simulation platform. If other people are saying that I should not compare it to a simulation engine, because it is not a simulation, nor was it ever meant to be a simulation engine, that we all agree!
Clark, if you also acknowledge that the features you describe can be added, and that you really can't judge whether Second life is a 'sufficient' simulation platform until you have tried building these features, then we do agree. :-)
It's a worthy list, but as Sean and others suggest, many of the items are ones that need not be coded into the software, and can/are being done by people/organizations using the software.
Or maybe you are not suggesting these 10 be part of the code, but you are looking for more instances where these features are developed?
This will be an imperfect process, but if I had to take one off that list for being inaccurate, which one would it be?

Second Life is not a lot different from many recent online developments in ICT insofar as they relate to learning in general and especially to my subject area, namely computer assisted language learning (CALL). In any kind of electronic learning environment students need specific learning goals, structured materials (levels, etc), default routes through the materials, interactive exercises and tasks, online help, human tutor guidance, and both intrinsic and extrinsic feedback. Language teachers have made good use of simulations - long before ICT became available to the masses - and there have been some good ICT examples such as “A la rencontre de Philippe”, “Granville” and “Who is Oscar Lake?” The skills used in developing these simulations could be applied to specific areas of Second Life. Let’s see what people have to say in the forthcoming Second Life Colloquium on Language Learning, which will take place on Second Life’s EduNation island on 23 June 2007.
I believe that most of what you describe in your post could be developed as an LSL application within Second Life itself. LSL has a remarkable ability to allow the creation of HUDs, interaction objects, etc. LSL is event driven and follows a "actors model" which is used for many simulation designs to begin with. So, keeping complex state variables, controlling avatar behavior and creating and tracking situational information which changes the environment is all achievable in LSL.
More complicated things like AIs require more skilled software engineering than you normally find in Second Life, so many of your assumptions are based, I believe, on what you have experienced as done by the many amateur programmers in SL, not on what is possible in the hands of a seasoned professional software team.
Second Life is an open platform, and it is as possible to create an interactive simulation of an edcuational scenario than it is to create a nuclear meltdown emergency response simulation.
Not that it is "easy". It requires some sophisticated knowledge of software engineering. However, the platform provides all the tools necessary for a competent engineering team to build something fairly sophisticated, and what is lacking in the platform is being improved rapidly.
I don't think the features you describe belong in Second Life itself, but rather they belong in a project plan for an educational environment to be developed WITHIN Second Life. Funding anybody? :-)
These are all good goals for SL. In the mean time, some of these things are being worked around in various ways, some more fruitfully than others. The one I see as needing to be addressed sooner rather than later in a big way is dynamic AI characters, and not just for learning environments, but for world in general. SL seems often lonely and empty with so many self-help stores. Who wants to go buy a coffee in a bar by clicking on an object? AI work (and play) characters who are visually indistinguishable from avatars representing RL people would provide a huge boost to the social sensibility of SL. I think this will also be quite useful in immersive learning environments.
As a novice to simulations and virtual worlds, I found SL a 'game' that required a whole lot of discovery and experiential learning - sometimes, not what I really have time and patience for; many times wondering what the purpose of my being there was. Until I overcame the initial steep learning curve of navigating around SL,I wasn't so sure about its educational value. I agree that there are infinite possibilities for the creative resident who learns how to design new objects and gestures. However, for those of us who are not so good with using 3D modeling tools and with zero LindeX, we are limited at this stage of SL's development to a teleporting around to 'look and see' of galleries and museums, largely by oneself.
... Though Clark's wishlist for SL seems to ask too much for SL at this point of their development - it not being a finished product like other games and sims, and never will be - it seems to me that Linden Labs at this point could provide more scaffolding, and not leave everything entirely up to its residents.
I would like to submit an eleventh to the list, or, at least suggest this for consideration.
In my time in SL, admittedly, 10 hours or less, which makes my point a pure opinion, and not fully an educated one, I tried to look for fidelity of experience to find how my time in SL might become something that has the potential for near or far transfer of learning.
For example, the creation of objects, building, and the "ownership" of land. Perhaps I'm missing the point of virtual space as something that rises above the mundane and practical aspects of physical life, but when you are able to simply stake a claim, write code, and "Voila!" you are a resident of standing and can make rules about your space all by your lonesome, it seems there's little value for anyone who might want to learn the complexities and legal and practical details associated with doing similarly in the physical world.
So, my point being, without the purposeful addition of, or recreation / modeling of, details in the processes used by SL users to "build a world" or be a part of a social organization, the lack of fidelity may inhibit meaningful learning towards measuring it's ability to promote near or far transfer of skills.
Perhaps this is not as appropriate if you were to focus on the learning of scripting, and developing expertise in this very rough and maturing technology development process - i.e. using the SL environment and tools and rules to learn how to create 3D environments and encourage its use - but for teaching much more than conceptual awareness and sharing visual and textual information, the experience lacks sufficient fidelity for many learning activities.
I would like to add a possible 11th to the list - that is more specific to how SL can be used to promote near and far transfer - related to fidelity of experience.
In my limited time in SL, I find that the analogy to social and object construction is there, but there is a lack of fidelity of experience due to the immaturity of the technology and the interesting, but rudimentary representations and mimicking of visual, kinetic, emotional, social, administrative, and interactive elements.
It seems that SL is limited to the potential to transfer visual and simple multimedia information - making the environment potentially useful for concept and exploratory and declarative knowledge learning, but constrained in it's ability to enable experiences for many things, that would or could result in near or far transfer of learning.
I can see opportunities for using the existing framework to create additional improvements or new instructional elements (pedagogical elements in Clark's book), but that too can be hindered by the necessary pre-requisite skills needed to script or "build" things - and also by the aforementioned limits of maintaining attention if the process of just learning to "be" in SL (move, interact, etc.) - contributes to the "lost interest / not used" syndrome of this new environment.
So, simply, the lack of fidelity of experience limits the potential for many learning opportunities - especially for the near and far transfer of learning.
I agree with the need to go open source - largely because the existing interface is, in my experience:
- cumbersome
- mostly non-intuitive (except for basic navigation)
- unstable
The last will likely be resolved with more eyes on the code, but the first two are much more interesting. I'd like to see new interfaces/means of interaction implemented (a la Nintendo's Wii controller — not that that is appropriate here…) and new tooling for both building, scripting and testing objects. Additionally, I'd like to see federated worlds that are hosted by autonomous organizations with, potentially, custom code bases and therefore custom rules governing them.
I've got to (grudgingly) agree that most of your requests are possible and that people are already attempting to fill them. The problem then is more one of how to accelerate such development, no?
There is another aspect to this conversation that is worth noting here, if not in the post directly. Some of the hype around SL runs along the line of, "Corporations can experiment with new designs of buildings here, before they build them in real life." This is, of course, odd, because what makes a good design in the "meat" world does not make a good design in the virtual world, and vice versa. This is in part issues of resolution, and in part issues that people can't teleport or fly in the meat world.
If I understand your definition of Trail correctly, then I believe that you could add this as another missing feature in Second Life(SL) as an educational simulation platform. SL does provide Landmarks, a mini-map, and map, however they do not provide any indication as to the path taken to get from one location to the other. I would consider the Landmarks to be bread crumbs, while the map and mini-map simply provide information about the surrounding area one is currently in.

What a great idea. It would be interesting seeing paths built up (footprints, breadcrumbs, whatever) including teleport trails of people over the last hour/day/month/year.
I know this is very late to the party, but I finally came across this thread in my rambles in virtual space.
I really think this all misses the mark by a wide margin.
What SL provides, and other competing platforms will provide and improve over time is the ability for teachers and learners to be together in a space that destroys distance. Not simulations of teachers. Real people, conversing and co-learning with other real people.
To imply that SL will reach its pinnacle once better robotic simulations are achieved, or when structured games are put in place, is like saying the real value of the telephone is finally here, now that we have touch-tone menus that allow us to interact with canned telemarketing scripts.
I have spent at least a thousand hours in Second Life. I am not interested in massively multi-player games. I have met and interacted with hundreds of new colleagues, many of whom I have now met in real life. I have learned, and I have taught, and I have benefited from real life opportunities that have only occurred through interactions in this space -- a virtual *space* for real interactions among *people*

I'd like to ask 2 questions of this group - and thank Clark for providing the opportunity for debate... open friendly debate seems to be a rare thing these days!
1. I am talking to various public bodies about visualising fly-throughs of buildings in SL in terms of identifying best ergonomic outcome to the design (i.e hospitals). I anticipate that this is one level of a multi-layered approach that includes identifying best practice in team working. Training content would be added to this.
2. I am producing a high-level architecture design of a 'connected' (i.e multiplatform) virtual world which would act as a portal for the 'Games for the Olympic Games' project (content across serious games and games plus commentary)in the UK - and for this we need to identify what platforms will provide the features and functionality we need now and for the future. For this I am in the process of researching the top 5 virtual world platforms. Advice and constructive comments are very welcome please.
I am new to evaluating the role of serious games in the business environment, but not new to business. I am troubled by the unstructured fantasy environment SL represents...I mean it's fun, but do we really need to validate another pastime as a legitimate journey to knowledge and constructive learning.
